'It seems to me that here are more hearts broken in the world, that can't be mended, left unattended...........'
So said one of Ireland's greatest moral philosophers.......or Gilbert O'Sullivan, as he preferred to be known.
Marta's mother Dora had had her heart shattered (she reminded Marta frequently) by Carmelo from Madrid. After just six weeks of marriage, he had run off with a tobacconist called Senga, leaving behind a souvenir ashtray ('Best wishes from Fuengirola'), a grumpy cairn terrier, and the few cells which would eventually become Marta.
Dora often wondered if her bitter opinion of men had somehow soured Marta's view of them. (It hadn't. Marta knew she'd have gone out with the same idiotic tossers no matter what her mother thought.)
All she really wanted, was to meet a decent, uncomplicated man with a six inch lens. And Blip was the place to start looking.
Another great philosopher said, 'What's in a dream? Is it all the things you'd like to have been? All the places that you haven't yet seen? Tell me what's in a dream.'
Oh wait - that was Gilbert O'Sullivan again..........
