The Great Yellow

The rarest British Bumblebee!
The Great Yellow Bumblebee was a target species for us in North Uist, one of the few remaining sites for this once widespread bee.
It requires large expanses of wild flowers to nectar on, and the croft style agriculture found there provides exactly that. Fields are sown with Kidney vetch to increase the soil fertility, and are in flower for many weeks while the bees are breeding.
We were lucky to see many bumblebees at the RSPB Balranald reserve, and hear corncrakes, all in superb western sunshine!
