For a Dig
This is an archaeological test pit situate on the site of Knockaloe Camp near Peel in the Isle of Man. This camp was built in stages as the first world war progressed. In the end it consisted of five separate camps all within the one perimeter fence. It lasted from 1914-19 and was used to house internees and prisoners of war. There were around 20,000 people housed here.
A railway line was constructed to serve its needs.
After the war the whole site was cleared of the wooden buildings that had been hastily erected and the materials were sold off.
One or two of the original huts can apparently still be found. I will go and look for them.
The aim of this dig is to get some idea of what artifacts remain in anticipation of a much more extensive dig, if funding can be secured.
I rather missed the presence of the late prof Mick Aston.
