Stone Jail.....

In keeping with my previous blips here is another old building. It is a very old jail used in the 1860's. Styx which is nearly at the end of the road south ot Ranfurly.How tough things were then.....

The jail, which in fact was mostly used as an overnight security lockup for gold being taken to Dunedin by those lucky enough to have struck it rich. But when law breakers did have to share the jail with gold chests, they were chained up to prevent escape and absconding with the gold. Some of these chains still hang from walls.
