Country House

Great Alne Mill was still in operation when we first moved to the village in 1981. A local bakery used to make a Great Alne Wheel loaf. It was a circle of whole wheat bread marked into wedges . Delicious it was too.
It used to be open to visitors before the safety 'Elf became so zealous about our well being. It was a death trap! There were open belts and moving bits and places you could fall down and probably all manner of vermin in the place too. It was fantastic. Kids loved it.
Apparently it was mentioned briefly in the Doomsday survey of 1086 as being worth about five shillings.
It was converted to 'luxury' riverside dwellings in 1989. It has caused a bit of controversy as some of the people who bought them decided they didn't like a footpath running a few feet from their window. The footpath was there first however.
I see there's one of these dwellings currently on the market for over half a million pounds.
