John Hutton

An old gravestone in North Leith graveyard. I had a wander past, and took this, (despite the dull, completely uncontrasty light) because I was fairly sure it was dated 25th January. On reflection, it might actually be March 25. Oh, well. It's today's blip whatever :)

On the top of the stone, you can just about read part of an inscription "O death, where is thy sting, O grave thy victory" (In fact, THY VICTORE)
The inscription on the face reads:

HEIR LYETH
JOHN HUTTON
W???.D
DECON (?OF THE)
WEIVARS IN
NORTH LEITH
THE 25 IAR 1669
AND OF AIG 39

So chief officer (Deacon) of the weavers guild. I love the combined letters (called ligatures?) like T and H in Leith, and the backwards Ns.
A gloomy blip for a gloomy Monday ;)
