The River

At Granny and Grandpa's house in Sussex on the hottest day of the year:

Swallows in the barn
Raspberries in the fruitcage
Blackberries ripening 'They're early?'
'Do you want to take the dogs to the river?'
Wheat growing golden
The air smells of summer
'Look at my egrets'
'I've found a butterfly with a broken wing'
Cartwheels and football on the lawn
'Mind Grandpa's border!'
'There's always jobs to be done'
'I just want to show you something'
Asparagus peas, marrows, cucumbers in the greenhouse, 'the tomatoes are going wild'
Small changes, everybody notices.
'Cheers!'
Kids and adults, all around the table
Eating outside at 9pm
Lamb, potatoes, tzatsiki, red wine
'Good brownies run in the family'
'Don't turn upside down after a meal'
'Say night night'
'Where am I sleeping?'
'If a burgler gets in, ring the cowbell'
'If a burgler gets in, hit him with your torch'
'I thought you were asleep'
Night night ...

A little piece of heaven.
