Tarr Steps

We went for a walk at Tarr Steps today, a place I haven't been since I was a child

It made for a lovely afternoon out, and even meant I had the chance to strip off the shoes and socks and dangle my feet in the cool clear river water - which was lovely

I do love a bit of paddling even if I do say so myself

For those of you who are interested Tarr Steps is what is known as a medieval clapper bridge (ie a bridge made of unmortared stones). During the bad storms the UK has had in recent years, the bridge has been washed away and later on rebuilt using all the original stones which have now been numbered to ensure that each stone goes back in the right place

It's unbelievable that this much damage has been done in the past when you see the river as it is to date - low enough that you can drive a 4x4 through it (and yes hubby had great fun testing his Land Rover out). It's also unbelievable when you consider that some of the stones that make up this bridge are over two tonnes in weight!

On a day like today though it was a truly tranquil and serene spot to spend a Friday afternoon in the sun
