Time flies like an arrow

I'm confused,or maybe I'm perplexed or it might be that I'm just dumbfounded. Why? Because I read in the paper that it took 2 hours for our friends across the pond to execute a man. I'm not going to enter into a debate about the rights and wrongs of the death sentence, but why is it that a vet can put a dog to sleep simply and painlessly with a single injection but the state is unable to do the same thing with a human being? They are either incompetent, sadistic, or possibly a bit of both.
