Tawny Pipit
They are not common here - although considerably commoner than in the UK. However if you go to the right sort of habitat here then you have a good chance of catching up with them. This bird was on some stony hay fields on the edge of a gorge, pretty similar to where I saw my first one at Dungeness in Kent.
A connoisseur's bird rather than one to everyone's appeal but a distinctive one nevertheless. It stayed on this rock for a while - I expect its nest was nearby. Shame it didn't move away from the errant heather obscuring its tail.
Otherwise Tricia took the assembled company off to the market in Largentiere and a swim in a local river. Pretty standard Ardeche day.
