Tales of the Guig

365 #206 - Culloden Moor

Culloden Moor isn't just a historic battle site but also the burial ground of up to 2,000 highland warriors and perhaps a few hundred government troops.
Because the moor is relatively flat to the eye and the prominent markers (the cairn and flags) are spaced out, it's quite difficult to capture a single evocative shot of the whole area, so I had to look for a different way to do it.
This was my 6th visit of the week and the first time I had some cloud to work with and the split light let me capture some of the moor with a dramatic sky. Despite there being some healthy thistles around, this rather ragged specimen felt right for this shot.
As an image it works better in black and white but as a representation of the mood of the place, the muted colour works better.
