Tiny nest

I wish I knew what happened to cause this little nest to fall to earth. Did the little, buried egg get left behind while others hatched and fledged? Was the mama watching as I placed it in the crook of the nearest tree or was she long gone, on to a new tree and, perhaps, a new family? So many questions with nary a peep as a clue.
