Sign o’ the Times
This man hand paints signs in this amazingly neat script every day. The town of Rovinj is on the Croatian peninsular of Istria, which has been Venetian and was Italian until the boarders were redrawn after the WW2 … and the Italian community in Rovinj is large and still very active. They have regular events which are advertised (in Italian and Croatian, with the occasional tempting bit of English) on the boards which are propped against the wall of a supermarket near the main square. We spend a lot of time sat in a bar opposite them, drinking coffee/beer/ Šljivovica/Istra Bitte with Orange Juice and translating the signs.
The Bar is called Batana, which it the name of the local traditional fishing boat and whose menu informs us …
“Caffé Bar ‘Batana’ has preserved the longest tradition and rich history since the end of the 19th Century. … The caffé bar has always been the most favourite meeting place of local citizens, especially artists, intellectuals, writers, singers and actors. … So now, enjoy and indulge in the atmosphere of Rovinj at the moment.”
Not sure how J and I fit with the “artists, intellectuals, writers, singers and actors” but it really is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.
