Another in the series . . .
. . . Looking Up in Carlisle when there is a Blue Sky.
This is the Clock Tower of the Old Town Hall in the centre of the city. The Grade 1 Listed Building was built in 1669 on the site of the original medieval Moot Hall, although this cupola was part of a 1717 extension. Here is a print that gives an idea of what it looked like around 1780. The building is now used to house the Tourist Information Centre, with shops at ground level.
The whole building has recently been subject to a restoration project involving the roof and the general structure. During the work a 344 year old Court Book was found in the roof space of the clock tower. This lists around 100 cases, mostly involving debt, and is all in Latin. It does make one wonder how on earth it got there.
