Remember Pinfolds?

Last year I researched a project that Andy Goldsworthy had carried out in our area. He found and rebuilt already existing pinfolds and built cone-shaped cairns within them. More information on the project can be found by following the links below to the four pinfolds that I blipped in May last year. The first one explains what he was doing.

There were six pinfolds completed, although he had plans for three more, which for one reason or another did not get built. This is one of the two that I found but didn’t blip.

Church Brough is a village near Kirkby Stephen and this pinfold was located within the grounds of the village Primary School. You can see the school climbing frame in this picture. Goldsworthy involved the children as much as possible, even leaving a window in the fold at child height. The children at the school watched the progress of the building and used it to inspire their own drawings, models etc.

At the time of the building in 2001 there was an extension being added to the school and this was eventually opened by Goldsworthy; there is a plaque on the wall to say that it was named after him. The lovely pale-gold sandstone, which shows up so well in today’s sunshine, was donated by a Swaldale quarry owner, whose grandson attended the school. He had dug out the stone himself, so was very interested in how it was used.

Another little tale – apparently the builders working on the extension had some cement left over and offered it to Goldsworthy – he ‘declined gracefully’!
