Late night by the harbour

We flew to Dubrovnik today for a few days away. An easy journey, and I'm glad we pre-booked a taxi from the airport to our hotel to avoid the crowds at the Pile Gate to the old town where we would otherwise have had to change from the bus to a taxi (or dragged our bags up and down the steps and hills of the old town to walk from there to the hotel).

The hotel is in an excellent position, with great views towards the old town, which is just a short walk away, it's own private access to the sea plus a generous size swimming pool. Although 5 stars in Croatia doesn't quite match 5 stars in London, it is still a lovely and very comfortable place.

This evening we wandered into to the old town and found a restaurant down by the old port. Seafood is the main feature here - which suits us very well. The prices were very reasonable too (certainly compared to London) and the live music from the pianist/singer - American/British light jazz style - was enjoyable, too.

After dinner we wandered round the old port, past several more restaurants and around to the other side. We spotted a few people wandering around a corner and decided to follow them: this led to a dimly lit jetty where lots of (generally) younger people had gathered, with an informal bar and music playing. They even played music from my youth (Knight in White Satin, Hotel California, etc). A fantastic and good natured atmosphere. The young lady shown here was sitting on the edge of the harbour with her legs dangling over the edge enjoying the quiet reflections across the water.

At midnight we left the port and returned to our hotel.

I think I'm going to like it here.
