The fifty shilling tailor
Look above the brash frontage of the new HSBC bank, you see the beautiful stonework of Montague Burton `Tailor of Taste`.
Born Meshe Osinsky, he came to the UK in 1900, changed his name to Montague Burton, apparently after spending time in Burton-upon-Trent, and started his tailoring business in Chesterfield.
At the outbreak of both World Wars, he stopped producing suits and turned to producing uniforms for the troops.
He became known for making a 5 guinea suit for 50 shillings (£ 2.50 today) and making the de-mob suits for returning servicemen...hence the phrase `Going for a Burton` and `The full Monty` which was the suit, shirt and tie.
The Burton brand remains today although I doubt if you could get a pair of underpants for £2.50 let alone a suit
