Red Factor Friesian

This wee calf was born overnight, and was bought into the shed this morning due to the terrible weather we have had today. I turned up after work to help feed the calves.

This calf is a red factor Friesian, and is rather a rare specimen. Most Friesian cattle are born black and white, but in this case, this calf has thrown to its recessive gene, and was born red and white.

My job this afternoon was to teach it to drink from the calf feeder. It was hungry, so took to drinking really fast. Tomorrow morning it will have it down to a fine art.

We've had shockingly cold weather today. It poured with rain during the night, with sleet and snow falling when the boys went to school. The sun came out several times during the day, although it was still very cold. While feeding the calves this afternoon, a very cold southerly came through, bringing with it snow, sleet, hail, wind and rain. At least our wee calves are nice and warm in their shed.
