Timbers on Tour: Bruthen
Backblip
Today we had a great, chilled out day. We were pretty slow from last night's fun, but a bacon sarnie and a (terrible) coffee sorted me right out.
We just lazed around for hours, went into Orbost for a look around (Damo and Aaron bought knitted beanies in the craft shop - so rock and roll!), then we were back to Marlo as Steve had managed to leave his phone at the hotel (this was after rolling his ankle on a flat path, that boy has skills!).
Seeing as we'd come all this way, we went to Cape Conran and sat at the beach for a couple of hours, just jamming and writing songs. Probably my favourite part of the weekend, it was so chilled out!
Then we set off for the hour's drive to Bruthen, where we were playing that night. What an awesome pub - really imposing, just sat on a hill like an old-style saloon (I'll blip it tomorrow).
Unlike last night, we were using the pub's PA system, which was buggy at best. We sound checked with about 2 hours to go, ate dinner (steak tonight, yum yum), had a few beers and got ready. Our pre-gig cup of tea quaffed, it was show time...
... or so we thought.
Unfortunately the PA had other ideas and we had an akward 5 minutes until I noticed that the fuse had tripped in the amp. Having sorted that out, we were good to go, so launched into "Tireless Sun", a pretty slow song that was unfortunately accompanied by an epic amount of feedback. Nick sorted that out by the end of the song, but it put us on the wrong foot. We actually played well but weren't really 'feeling' it, so we did a short first set (about half an hour), then took a break and returned to an epic 70 minute set which we were happy with.
One of the main reasons for playing down here was to get our foot in the door for the summer season, where festivals abound and the place fills with tourists. Some of the festival organisers were at the gig and it appears that we've secured a spot down there this February. Mission accomplished!
