Seal

After consulting with each other and the weather (still raining, but with a gathering high wind in addition) we abandoned our plan of camping for the next couple of nights. We doubted our ability to pitch our tent upon sodden ground and secure it sufficiently not to blow away. We came to terms with our wimpy-ness and found a room in a wee hotel in Campbeltown.

Then we had an excursion round the south of the peninsula - Southend, where we visited the caves, saw St Columba's well, and the huge crag from which some folk were thrown to their death after having surrendered in a battle in 1647. Dearie me. The sun came out for a while, but the wind was now so fierce that it was difficult to stand up. We drove around to Machrihanish which was a bit more sheltered and sat watching some gannets diving for fish for a while. This seal was reclining on a rock that was gradually getting coverered by the incoming tide, but it wasn't going to stop him doing his yoga asanas.

(We were very impressed by the large number of specimens of Cordyline australis that we encountered flourishing in and around Campbeltown - I've put one in the blipfolio for cabbagetree's amusement!)
