Eynhallow Sound
We had a great day on Rousay, looking at a few Neolithic tombs; Taversoe Tuick, Black hammer, Knowe of Yarso and Midhowe. The latter is enormous and beautifully built.
Then we went along to Midhowe Broch, built in the 1st century. It's a wonderful structure, in a fabulous location, but I'm not sure how wise the builders were. In the first place the doorway faces west - in the teeth of the prevailing winds, and secondly the whole thing started to fall down and needed propping up. Perhaps it was all about location, location, location back then too?
This is the view south, across Eynhallow Sound. The overfalls on the ebbing tide are spectacular. Midhowe Broch is in the foreground.
