Martha and Gilbert!

"Giraffes",
A People Who live between earth and skies
Each in his own religious steeple
Keeping a lighthouse with his eyes.
Roy Campbell 1946

These two open-work metal giraffes, a mother and a calf, stand in front of the Omni Centre on Leith Walk in Edinburgh. They are the work of sculptor Helen Denerley who makes large life-sized sculptures of animals out of scrap metal. Their bodies are constructed from recycled metal, discarded from parts of motorbikes and cars. The official title of the sculpture is "Dreaming Spires", but is affectionately known by the sculptor as Martha and Gilbert.

The poem by Roy Campbell is in raised bronze letters in a circle on the pavement. around the giraffes.
