Derwent Dam Derbyshire

This reservoir and dam, with the glorious heather-covered hillside.beyond, is not only one of the most beautiful locations in England, but also has a close tie to RAF Bomber Command 617 Squadron - the "Dambusters".
Here in 1942 and 1943 the Squadron rehearsed, and refined, their bombing techniques with the Barnes Wallis designed "bouncing bomb", in preparation for the famous raid of 16/17 May 1943 on the Ruhr dams.
On the West side of this dam is a small Chapel of Remembrance and memorial dedicated to the 204 men of 617 Squadron who gave their lives in WWII.
The "City of Lincoln" - the last airworthy Lancaster left in the UK, and which has been engaged recently in some memorial flypasts, returned to this location in May 2008 - and flew down the Derwent Valley to mark the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters raid.
