Avoch Harbour
I was a bit desperate for a blip today, I had forgotten to change the battery in my camera when we went for a lovely beach walk with Freddie. I had also forgotten to post my husband's letter, so I popped out again down to the harbour to take a photo and post the letter.
I have often taken photos of this lovely old boat, it is always moored in the harbour and looks so cheerful even on a damp November day. I had no idea of its history though. Today, as I was standing there snapping away, along came the owner who told me some of it's story.
It was built, along with it's sister ship in 1937 in Holland. When the Germans invaded Holland during the war, the other ship escaped but this one was seized by the German's and used for sentry duty along the Dutch Coast. When the Canadians liberated Holland towards the end of the war, the Germans blew up the ship so that the enemy couldn't take it. It sunk in the harbour but was salvaged, along with some others that had shared the same fate and was rebuilt.
I never heard the rest of the story as we were interrupted by a friend who came into the conversation and then the rain came down, but I shall try and get into conversation with the owner again to hear the rest.
