Mostly Six Five Oh

By nhc

Ugh. So after my hard work on the decking yesterday I left some clothes to soak in the laundry room sink and promptly forgot all about it, with the faucet running. Yep. I flooded part of the basement. As you can imagine, I am highly unimpressed with myself.

I mopped up as fast as I could go, then I discovered water seeping up between the floorboards when I stepped on them. We spent hours of horrible and very hard work ripping up the bamboo flooring, baseboards, bits of damp drywall at the bottom of the walls... The water had traveled a long way under the walls and under the vapor barrier under the floorboards. We didn't even stop to think about calling our house insurance folks right away. Perhaps we were faster than they could have been in getting someone out here, I don't know. Windows are all open and fans are blasting and have been since yesterday evening, things are drying quickly and the smell of damp drywall is going away.

It doesn't seem that I have ruined the whole basement, as far as I can tell. A water/moisture/mold testing guy is coming bright and early tomorrow to check things out, then I have a technician coming to inspect the furnace - the water had traveled right under it. After thoroughly going over the furnace I decided to be brave and turn it back on this afternoon to see if it worked, it does.

Called a contractor who will be coming next week to bid on what hopefully will be some minimal demo and repair - drywall, carpentry, reflooring, repaint. We were worried the flooring manufacturer didn't make the flooring anymore but according to their website we're in luck so we may avoid the expense of re-flooring the whole place and would save us some major $$.

Insurance claim is in, we'll hear back in a couple of days. I am exhausted and can barely move.

Apologies if the blurb to my blip is a bit discombobulated but I am feeling like a bit of a wreck. Ha! Will check in with you all as soon as I can see a bit straighter.

We completely gutted and remodeled this basement in 2008. Sigh.
