Art As A Commercial Vehicle, London
Day 240 of 365. Sometimes you think of artists struggling away in their studios living off cold baked beans from a can, barely scrapping a living but more and more, especially in London, it is a multi million (or more probably billion) pound business. In the 80's and 90's it seemed to be all about Saatchi and his buying powers - how he could make and break artists by buying their entire output. More recently the art market seems to be about the colossus that is Contemporary Art, it's now a massive behemoth that incorporates fairs, auctions and many, many galleries. Particularly in the part of London where I work new galleries seem to be opening all the time. The one in this shot is down a very narrow street just off Oxford Street. Due to work relating to Crossrail huge lorries have to squeeze down this road, reversing very carefully as they do so. Maybe if they crashed through the window they could pretend it was performance art!
