Before & After Malevich, Southbank, London
Day 241 of 365. Decided to go and see the exhibition of works by the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich at Tate Modern. I have an interest in Russian art due to having to photograph Russian paintings as part of my job. I'm particularly fascinated by his abstract works which I think are stunning - wonderful use of form, shape and colour. He lived through such a tumultous period in Russian history which included the revolution and the reigns of Lenin and, for the last few years of his life, Stalin. From the catalogue I've read a bit about his artistic manifesto which seemed all encompassing (and also quite hard to understand - I think I need to read more about it).
The story about him that I find really fascinating is about his painting The Black Square. After falling foul of Soviet ideas about art this picture disappeared from view for over forty years, gaining almost mythical status before it was seen again in the sixties. His abstract art was so ahead of it's time and , in it's own way, artistically revolutionary.
Today's image was taken before I saw the exhibition but edited afterwards. I would never claim to be particularly wonderful at abstracts but I do love trying to find a combination of colour, shape and form that I like. In my own way I hope this is a small tribute to such a wonderful and ground breaking artist. I would highly recommend the exhibition if you have time to go and see it.
