The Biancograt , 'the stairway to heaven'

This early morning shot of Piz Bernina (4049 metres) clearly shows the knife-edged snow arete of the Biancograt. It is a famous route much prized by mountaineers who come from all over the world to attempt an ascent. The weather was clear and cold as Piper and I went for a glorious walk up in the alpine scenery and apart from the marmots we did not see a soul until on our return journey. Bliss.
