Carrickfergus Castle

After a very early start, but very short plane trip, we arrived in Dublin. We messed around finding our hire car and getting on the road but then it was straight on to Belfast to Lil and Chris' place. We arrived there late in the morning and after lunch Lil and Chris took us for a short drive to Carrickfergus where we got to see our first Irish castle. I took this shot out of one of the castle windows.

Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland, situated in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough. Besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928 and remains one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland. It was strategically useful, with 3/4 of the castle perimeter surrounded by water.

It was a beautiful sleepy little town and a fun afternoon out. Our night was spent eating cheese, drinking wine and catching up. You can't get much better than that!
