Glasgow University
Trip to the west for No 1 and I, Glasgow University Open day.
Great day, but very tiring, loads of walking (uphill and upstairs!). The organisation was excellent, everyone was extremely helpful, AND the sun shone !
I've not been on this campus for about 30 years, and there has been a few changes including a new library block which now dominates the skyline.
The older buildings are breathtaking (we LOVED the cloisters) - however the lecture theatres are modern additions - a slight disappointment - as I expected huge rows of wooden benches, worn shiny by hundreds of years of bottoms !
We sat through talks on Architecture (7 years !), Civil Engineering with Architecture (room full of blokes), and Product Design with Engineering (looked like a lot of fun).
With the added bonus that we were able to park at Kelvingrove Art Gallery (£1 for 4 hours - top tip!). We didn't have time to visit Kelvingrove but were mighty impressed by the Hunteriun Museum and the Art Gallery. We even scored a tour on 'Whistler' - as the University has the largest Whistler Collection. Bequeathed to the University by his sister-in-law because Whistler didn't like the English ! (He would probably vote 'Yes' then!).
The accommodation at the Queen Margaret met with No 1's approval (better than Strathclyde) - although I wanted to shampoo the carpets before my baby would be allowed to step barefoot on them!
Funny story:
We were walking up the University, past Kelvingrove Park. A lady jogger was passing very close - she was of generous proportions....
No 1 : ' Look at that fat bird!'
Me : <shocked> ' that's not very kind dear'
No 1: 'No...the fat...bird ! (there was an enormous pigeon on the ground.
(titters).
