Tuolomne River
The river is low compared to the other years we've stood in this exact place. Right here the rocks glow a burnished orange and the water flows gently, making shallow cold pools. This image is like me-- tilted, and a little melted around the edges. The altitude (8,6oo feet) is always challenging and I never escape this trip without a headache, nausea and general wooziness. Mr S is off on a hike upriver and I opt for a slow day in camp and a stroll by the water. This river feels like a sacred place to me and I want to fill myself with the granite-fresh air, breathing deeply and saving up all this magic to sustain me til next time.
