The Oseberg Ship
Pretty full day of amazing sites today. Hopped on a ferry over to Bygdoy to the Vikingskipshuset. The three Viking ships housed here date from around 820!
This is the stern of the Oseberg ship. The carved animal motif is exquisite, and extends the full length of the keel.
Whilst I was taking a photo of the Oseberg Ship, from a raised platform, an American came and stood beside me and said "Gee look at all the dust on there, doesn't anyone get up there and dust ever?" I couldn't reply!! But after seeing an American walk in an stroke the painted wall of the Italian Chapel I shouldn't have been surprised.
The on to the Fram Museum to learn about the Norwegian polar explorers; Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup and Roald Amundsen. The museum houses the Fram, which took part in both Arctic and Antarctic exploration, including Amundsen's successful expedition to the South Pole. The Gjoa is also on display, she was the first ship to successfully traverse the Northwest Passage, another of Amundsen's expeditions.
Then over the road to the Kontiki Museum before hopping on a bus back to central Oslo.
This evening I was fortunate to eat at Statholdergaarden, a Michelin star restaurant - a first for me. It was outstanding, as you might expect. (I'm glad I wasn't paying the bill).
It was quite a day.
