When in Rome... (2)

... eat ice cream! And preferably from a gelaterie artigianali that makes ice cream using only fresh ingredients. It tastes amazing! We didn't buy from the place in the photo but from a little shop in an alley near the Via di San Simone.

After a good night's sleep in a small but very comfortable room, a shower in the smallest shower cubicle known to man and a good breakfast, we set out for the day.

We knew that most museums in Rome are closed on Mondays, so we decided to explore on foot, with a route that took us past many of Rome's best known fountains. Sadly, the Trevi Fountain is currently drained and almost completely hidden from view as it's undergoing restoration work, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers is not visible at all as it's also undergoing restoration work, but we did get to see quite a few others. We also visited the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and two lovely bridges, Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II and Ponte Sant'Angelo.

We finished our day at Pizzeria Al Forno della Soffitta where I had a lovely mushroom pizza. I followed this up with a wonderful Torta Caprese, which must surely be the tastiest dessert ever invented - a chocolate cake made with ground almonds. Oh, and the meal was accompanied by more wine, of course!
