Do something different 1 - Eat something different

Today's blip is serving two purposes - one: it's a blip and it's today's photo. The second purpose is a little stranger.

Regular readers may know of my MOOC addiction. Well my latest fix is a Coursera course on Creative Problem Solving. I haven't yet decided what level of effort I will put into this course, as I am concurrently enrolled in a number of other courses which have more tangible benefits. And when I read the first assignment ... well, the idea of it didn't thrill me.

Each week there is a Do Something Different assignment. This week it was Eat Something Different. I had no plans to eat anything different or unusual. But I wasn't averse to the idea. What worries me is that we are encouraged to undertake these assignments in public and we have to collect evidence.

Clearly, as I sat and ate something different today I did it at home, by myself. I figured that by posting a photo I will at least be able to rate the activity as semi-private. So that's the second reason for the blip. I will need to add some other photos - still not sure that I'm going to do these assignments - but just in case ...

Here you have my Eat Something Different.

What is it? Well it's a variation on something called Krokiety z grzybami i kapusta - or, in English, sauerkraut and mushroom croquettes. I skipped the final part of the recipe for health reasons - in the recipe once the sauerkraut and mushroom mixture is rolled in the crepes, you egg & breadcrumb them, then fry them. It's a Polish recipe I found on the internet.

So how does this meet the Eat Something Different challenge? Well, I've never really bothered with eating sauerkraut. Something about the idea of it just didn't excite me. It was on special at the local supermarket the other day and I decided it was time to try it. Then the hunt was on to find something to do with it. Seriously, when I bought it, it didn't occur to me how well it would go with mushrooms.

The verdict - the filling for the crepes is delicious. To be honest, I think I could skip the crepes, and as you can see one of mine was a little anaemic - I ate the best ones before taking the photo! So sauerkraut (steamed), mixed with mushrooms, onions, garlic, salt and pepper tastes delicious. I can imagine it tossed through some steamed rice, or some pasta. And it's good in crepes. I'm sure it would taste great in egg and breadcrumbs too, but I'm trying to be healthy ...
