When in Rome... (6)
... be left utterly baffled by the public transport!
Just because a tram stop, or bus stop, has a route number on it, you shouldn't expect that that particular tram, or bus, will turn up at that stop. We planned a journey from one part of the city to another, taking a bus that ran a circular route. The bus turned up. We got on it. We stayed on it for the entire route, ending up back where we started from. At no point did it go to any of the places on the timetable, going instead to a completely different part of the city!
Our last morning in Rome involved a short walk to Porta Maggiore (a part of the city we hadn't been to before), a wait for a tram that never turned up, a different plan for getting back to our hotel, a bit of souvenir shopping, one last artisan ice cream, and a minibus ride to the airport that seemed to visit most of the tourist hot spots of Rome! (Fortunately, we'd booked and paid in advance so we didn't get 'taken for a ride'). What an amazing holiday!
I've deliberately not blipped much in the way of the best-known sights of Rome - how can anyone possibly take an original photograph of such a marvellous place? Instead, I've tried to show bits of our holiday that were special to us.
