Interesting holes....
Manchester seems to be full of interesting holes at the moment. One has appeared in Albert Square where underground services are being moved to make way for the new tram line on Princess Street. Another hole has appeared on Cross Street for the same purpose. It's outside the Cross Street Chapel and, as well last the gas and telephone lines, they are having to move 200+ bodies that used to be in the grave yard of the chapel.
And on the NOMA development by the Co Op's flashy eco-friendly HQ an entire surface car park s being dug up by archaeologists to see what's there. What seems to be there is the remains of Angel Meadow, the delightfully named but notorious Victorian slum that inspired Mr Marx and Mr Engels to come up with the idea of Communism.
I've noticed that when the archaeologists are sent in, it's usually something that happens before the land is redeveloped. In this case, the car park is going to disappear to make way for a series of office and apartment blocks, one of which is almost as tall as the nearby CIS Tower. Projects are springing up like weeds all over the city at the moment. It's good to see the construction industry doing well again and great to see the city pulling itself out of the recession.
