Remembering the First World War
We broke our journey back to London half way. This morning we walked round Durham. At the back of the cathedral we found an extraordinary memorial to the 1914-18 war. It's carved with deep incisions, echoing the Norman decoration of the pillars inside the cathedral. But it also has engravings of contemporary military equipment - not at all what you would expect to find on a monument of remembrance.
