Milking the Mushrooms

Mostly catching up with a few jobs at home today, but found an hour to go down to the cemetery to look for fungi. There were quite a few around, but Philip, the groundsman. had clearly been about with his mower, so there were minced wax caps in the grassy sward.
I did find a small patch of these Milk Caps (Lactarius) unmangled in one corner. Whereas Waxcaps are a visual feast, Lactarius are more of an assault on a range of senses. When damaged they exude a milky juice (hence the name) which can be mild or very hot on the tongue. They also have lots of interesting smells - curry, coconut, bed bugs…. Most have whitish milk, one has milk that turns yellow on a hankie, a couple have bright orange milk. Some are quite hairy. Fungi - never a dull moment!
Off to Longshaw again tomorrow.
