Mountain overload.
We have seen more mountains today in the most stunning settings than I can even contemplate. We travelled the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Banff with wonderful clear skies to enjoy them all.
Jasper was still a little cloudy when we left but when we stopped to admire Mt Edith Cavell on the Athabascar River the clouds were gone.
A little further we went to look at the Athabascar Falls, real thunderers with spray every where.
This is still the Athabascar River a little further on and I'm afraid I don't know what the mountains are. I just like the way the river sparkles though it probably doesn't show just how blue it is.
The Athabascar is a heritage river and is the most important river in the Jasper area. It was through the Athabascar pass that the first Europeans came into the area for trapping and exploration.
Further on and higher we came to the Columbia Icefield. You can go on the glacier on a bus but there was a two hour wait. So we walked. The glacier is the source of the Athabascar, Columbia and Saskatchewan rivers. The waters of the Athabascar flow down into the Arctic Ocean the others into, the Pacific and the Atlantic. A high percentage of Western North America's water supply is fed from here and as the glacier is receding it is thought that it will have disappeared in 100 years, it's water supply with it!
There was lots of fresh snow on the mountains as we headed down into Banff National Park. They were all stunning but I was starting to get a bit mountained out.
Just outside Banff you join the Trans Canada Highway 1, a dual carriage way. They have built overpasses along the way for the wildlife to cross! What a great idea.
We are now in our last destination, Banff and have had a super day getting here.
