Day 4: Fljotstunga - Vik
It was a wet and windy day today. We righted our detour up to Fljotstunga and made our way back down to the South coast. We made lots of stops - firstly at Seljalandsfoss- the incredible waterfall you can walk behind - and got absolutely soaked! Another powerful waterfall was Skogafoss. The cloud was hanging so low all day, which unfortunately blocked our views of the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano. We off-roaded for a while to find the plane wreck on the beach. It was so incredibly eerie. The US Navy plane crashed landed in 1973, with all the crew surviving, and the wreckage has been left on the beach. Finding it was no easy feat, and involved driving along a disorientating unmarked track on the black sands for about 15 minutes. After a look around, and climbing inside, we returned to the world and continued along to Dyrholaey cliffs, with great views along the coast and to the sea-weathered columns by Vik. It wasn't too far to Vik, where we got our first cooked meal in three days (it was so good!), and checked in to our hostel before heading back out to find some amazing basalt columns to climb up. We had the whole beach to ourselves in the fading light, it was really fun to run around after lots of time in the car.
