Squashes...

I love squashes and pumpkins but, apart from a bit of roasting and making soup, I'm never sure what to do with these vegetables. I should do some research. I'm sure all the trendy, boho, Eco-friendly, vegans of Chorlton have shelves full of cook books dedicated to just that. I found this box of them in Elliott's, an independent green grocer in Chorlton Precinct where I'm known. ASDA don't have any at all. I love the shapes and the colours and they are another reminder that autumn is on it's way.

I'm told the local primary school is doing its Harvest Festival service soon. Us city types think the harvest is just getting under way in the country but a farmer friend scoffed at this. Harvest was in July and early August. He's up to ploughing his fields and scattering in anticipation of next year. And as I drove through Lancashire today I did notice a lot of bare, recently ploughed fields.
