The Die is Cast...
Where do you go once you have made the most momentous and difficult decision of your life and voted accordingly? To the chippy of course. ;-))
Today has been an odd day. I've felt a bit out of sorts, not able to settle to anything. Starting something then wandering off leaving it half done, without really being aware of my movements. A sort of in limbo day but with a definite sense of the living through the hours as the course of our country's history changes with each passing second. It has been that palpable. Well for me anyway.
I have been completely taken aback by how emotional I have felt. I love Scotland with a passion. I also love the UK. And It upsets me greatly to think that people in England think this whole independence thing has come about because we hate the English. That is just not true. Not true at all.
It also upsets me that we are being portrayed in the media as whinging, demanding, selfish, scrounging, subsidised Scots. That is also just not true.
I have seen the same newspapers with one headline for England and another, opposing headline for Scotland. Playing us off against each other. I will never trust the British media again.
But the time for deciding is over. I'm glad about that.
And I am proud beyond measure that the people of Scotland have stepped up to the plate, on both sides of the argument, and not only got involved, but immersed themselves in the whole debate. As Kevin Bridges says, even the taxi drivers are quoting economic policy! :-))
Inevitably there has been examples of nastiness from both sides, but please believe me when I tell you that that is definitely a minority. I am so proud of how my fellow citizens of all ages, backgrounds and political persuasions have conducted themselves with pride, integrity and dignity. But of course that doesn't make for good media headlines.
As I write, the YouGov pol is predicting 54% No and 46% for yes. Time will tell.
Regardless of the outcome, I hope the people of Scotland continue to care so much about what happens here and that political apathy is now a thing of the past. We have reminded ourselves that we can make a difference and I hope that's a lesson we never forget.
One final thing I want to record for posterity....I saw this comment on a friend's Facebook. She said, "So the polling station in Falkirk closed about 8pm...the reason??? 100% of those registered to vote did." How amazing is that?!!!
Then let us pray that come it may,
As come it will for a' that,
That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree an' a' that.
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That Man to Man the warld o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.
