Young Grebe Gets Fed
Today our small birding tour made a day-long circuit from our hotel in Pomerie, Bulgaria. We explored a variety of habitats, along lakes and on a number of hills.
These are Great Crested Grebes. The adult (on the left) clearly had two offspring hanging around to be fed. It would dive, and when it came up with a fish (not always), one or both of the juveniles (with striped heads) would dash toward it, in speedboat fashion. It was the first time I had seen this behavior in these grebes--it was a great deal of fun to watch!
We were on the shore of a large inland lake, bordering the city of Burgas--see the map.
