Pickled...
We've a bit of a cucumber glut at the moment so I'm pickling some. My boys are big gherkin fans so I'm hoping that these will feed them over the winter. I've never made gherkins before, and was really surprised by how much water comes out when you salt them. Guess I shouldn't really be surprised given cucumbers are mostly water! Tomorrow I rinse them and pack them in jars with vinegar and spices.
I'm thinking about entering for the SWRI housewives proficiency test in baking and in preserves, so may use them for my pickles part of the test. A is amused that the housewives proficiency test doesn't involve any housework like ironing, dusting or vacuuming, and is just baking & cooking. I'm pleased, it's the only way I'd ever have a chance of being classed as proficient! And after all a housewife does need to be able to rustle up a batch of scones at any moment, as you never know when someone might pop round for a cuppa!
