Fox Glacier in the rain

The weather was horrendous this morning which made us think again how lucky we were to have made the glacier hike yesterday .... they wouldn't be going today for sure!

We drove up the road to Fox Glacier and had a little walk in the rain ... hence the pic. Fox Glacier used to be accessible by foot but since a storm a couple of months ago when their path collapsed, you have to access it by helicopter now. We walked as far as we could and could just about see the glacier through the rain.

We decided to drive today as the weather was so rubbish and headed towards Haast ... absolutely nothing to do there so continued along the Haast Pass to Wanaka. The Haast Pass closes regularly due to recent rock falls and was closing at 5pm that night so we only just made it. Along the way we got stopped by the road maintenance as they were monitoring the rock fall. They let one car pass at a time whilst looking anxiously up at the rock face ... a little scary but we made it ok.

Wanaka is a cool little snowboarding town and is ridiculously scenic ... snow capped mountains and lakes wherever you turn. We're not far from Queenstown now and are beginning to see what all the fuss is about. Bit cold here though!
