I wonder if this was used for loading barges? There are very few barges on the Caledonian Canal these days, and apart from the occasional fishing vessel, no commercial traffic. The beauty of Telford's canal is the fact that it links natural bodies of water in the Great Glen, such as Loch Ness and Loch Oich.
