Breaching the Sandbar
This image is better if you can magnify it. If you look between the two pieces of heavy equipment on the beach, you can see a lagoon ending at the steps to the amusement park. This pool of stagnant water has been a source of annoyance at the beach for several weeks--it's a seasonal thing that has something to do with the river that is just out of sight past the Ferris wheel, and the tides. The river mouth gets blocked with sand, the water backs up on to the beach and also floods the basement area of the amusement park. There is much sensitivity around opening up a channel to move the water--wildlife habitat and water quality must be considered, permits acquired from multiple agencies, local, state and federal. It's a huge deal, and this morning we stood around and watched the bulldozer cutting a channel to drain the nuisance water. I did want to stay until the flow began, but there was no telling how long that would really take. After the water goes down they will fill in the channel.
