Bunkerdag

Last Saturday we were lucky enough to be able to visit a real bunker, used and built by the Germans, during WW2, as part of Bunkerdag in The Hague.

Bunkerdag is the one day a year, in which these bunkers are open to the public - normally they are closed, to preserve them.

On our visit, we saw part of a complex of bunkers under Westduinpark (a beautiful area of dunes, which you can see behind the girls), and when you see the map of the warren created underground you can begin to understand how (according to the Bunkerdag website) whole neighbourhoods were displaced, in order to build some of the bunkers further inland.

Here, the girls are sitting on the top of the bunker - what I presume was part of the bunker lookout. Nowadays, this is just a viewpoint looking out across the North Sea to one side and the city on the other.
