Karoo Homage.
A few months back I happened to run into the journal of Marychristine16 here on Blipfoto. I was browsing through recently posted images and spotted one in which the architecture made it clear that the photograph was taken in South Africa. Since then I have followed her journal daily and she has evoked in me a nostalgia for this dry, harsh and inhospitable place which occupies a vast area of South Africa. And yet it is a strangely beautiful environment dotted with small towns somehow frozen in time, railway lines stretching across the vast horizons and the fondest of memories for me. This is where my family travelled for winter holidays, since my father had spent boyhood holidays on his family's sheep farm near Prieska. In addition, my uncle and aunt farmed in the Cradock district and there were holidays there when I was really too young to remember the details. And yet this place calls to me. Realizing that a visit to the Karoo is not in my cards any time soon, I have to settle for living vicariously through the eyes of others. This book arrived in the mail today.
