Souterrain or Cave of Raitts

An amazing 70 feet long horseshoe shaped souterrain, although entering right it is possible to walk about 20 feet and thereafter blocked. It is stone built and roofed with slabs 8 x 3 feet. There is evidence that the site has been used since Iron age times, 55BC -55AD, but this construction probably dates from 14th century, and was used for food storage. Above on the hillside we explored the Pictish village. An excellent day in excellent weather and part of the Highland Council Archaeology Month activities.
